Our Founding

Many people around you may never truly understand the creativity, passion, and pride that it takes to power a successful restaurant. We understand how hard it is and, in fact, we've faced the same challenges here at Toast.

When Aman, Steve, and Jon first launched Toast as a consumer payments app for restaurants they quickly found that they were blocked at every turn by tired, dated, legacy point of sale systems and that restaurants of all sizes were in search of a better solution. One that was easy to deploy, could be accessed from anywhere, and intuitive to use.

In July of 2013 they launched Toast Point of Sale. Built on Android and based in the cloud, Toast was quickly embraced by the restaurant community in our hometown of Boston and grew quickly from there. Through word of mouth the growth of our community continued to accelerate. In fact, to this day, 1 out of every 5 new restaurants on Toast comes as a referral from an existing customer.

Today we remain passionately focused on serving our community of restaurateurs. Whether it is in person at our community events, Food for Thought, or through an online class available through Toast University, we're committed to empowering the artists, entrepreneurs, and creators that power our industry and serve our community.

Our Founding Story

We're a young company. Founded in 2011 and launched in 2013, we're headquartered in Boston with over 1,400 Toasters (that's what we call ourselves) across the US and even in Dublin, Ireland. Focused on the restaurant industry from the start, today we power tens of thousands of restaurants across our growing Toast Community.

Toast launches, and fails, as a consumer payment app due to lack of support from dated, tired, legacy POS systems.

2013

Barismo goes live on Toast Point of Sale and becomes the first restaurant to adopt a cloud-based point of sale running on Android.

2014

Toast introduces integrated online ordering, gift cards, loyalty and kitchen display systems.

2015

Toast hired employee #100 and moves to the Landmark Center in Fenway

2016

The Toast Community continues to grow and thrive with thousands of successful restaurants on board in 49 states. North Dakota becomes the 50th, and final, state to join the Toast Community in early 2017.

Toast named the third fastest growing technology company in North America by Deloitte
