A tip pooling calculator is a tool that works out what each employee takes home after a shift’s tips are combined and redistributed. Tip pooling is when tipped employees combine some or all of their tips into a shared pool, which is then redistributed among a defined group of workers. Restaurants use it to even out earnings across a shift so take-home pay reflects the whole team's work rather than which section a server happened to be assigned.

Each contributing role puts an agreed percentage of its tips — and sometimes gratuities — into the pool. The pool is then divided among the recipients, most commonly weighted by hours worked so a full-shift employee receives a larger share than someone who worked two hours, or split evenly per person.

Each employee's final take-home is: their original tips, minus what they contributed, plus their share of the pool. The calculator above runs this automatically for your whole team.

Add up every contributor's share of tips to get the total pool. To split by hours, divide the pool by the total hours worked by all recipients to get a per-hour rate, then multiply each recipient's hours by that rate. To split evenly, divide the pool by the number of recipients.

For example, a $280 pool across a team working 34 combined hours works out to about $8.24 per hour worked — so an employee on the floor for 8 hours takes home roughly $65.88 from the pool.

A points system lets you weight shares by position, not just hours. Each role — or individual — is worth a number of points per hour: a bartender might be worth 4 points, a server 3, and a bar back 2. A person's share is their hours × points, so someone who closes still earns for the extra time, while higher-responsibility roles earn more for each hour on the floor.
